Study Abroad Scholarships

Welcome

Congratulations on taking the first step towards earning scholarships to fund your undergraduate study abroad experience! Many, though not all, of the scholarship applications are due over one year in advance of studying abroad, before you even apply to study abroad, so start early.

Searching for Scholarships

First, we suggest you look at a listing of the most common study abroad scholarships for University of Illinois undergraduates. The scholarship listing provides basic information about the awards and where to find further details. While we included all of the scholarships we generally are aware of on this listing, we also encourage you to conduct your own search for other scholarships.

Nearly all University of Illinois students will be eligible to apply for an Illinois International scholarship. This award shares an online application with other scholarships, including the Chad Lobdell and the Charles Wert scholarships and three different International Programs and Studies (IPS) Scholarships (general merit, nontraditional destination, and underrepresented students). The three IPS scholarships are submitted completely online while the others require further materials to be submitted in hardcopy. Be sure to read through the detailed information regarding eligibility and submission requirements on the online application.

Drafting Applications

Once you select the scholarship opportunities that fit you, begin drafting your essays and requesting your letters of recommendation (if required). Use the advice on crafting competitive applications and perhaps review some sample essays.

Further, the Office of Scholarships for International Study is available to assist you in revising applications for regionally or nationally competitive study abroad scholarships (those marked with an * on the listing, such as the Gilman, NSEP, or Rotary). Provide your submission materials/essays to the office via email attachments to scholarships@uiuc.edu, and then schedule an appointment to discuss your draft. We generally are able to meet with students within two or three days of when they submit their materials, so backwards plan from the deadline to make time for these reviews.

If you are applying for one of the many scholarships offered through the University of Illinois, such as those provided through various colleges or through IPS, we suggest you utilize the Writer's Workshop and have a peer review your work.

Future Opportunities

Did you enjoy applying for some of these awards? If you are considering graduate studies either domestically or abroad or would like to head overseas again after graduation, scholarships such as the Fulbright or Rhodes provide full funding. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time while abroad and become more competitive for these future opportunities.
