This conference's theme is "World Geography and the Environment," that included assembling local scholars from geography and other related social sciences to present.


4th Annual Global Studies Forum
March 17 and 18, 2006

This annual event has been a pioneering effort in exploring ways teachers can ensure that high school students develop the international awareness, skills, and understanding necessary to cooperate and compete effectively in today's globalizing world.

2006 Joint Area Centers Symposium: Teacher and Student Workshops on Human Trafficking and Slavery
February 23-25, 2006

This conference aims to (1) advance knowledge about their underlying causes; (2) evaluate current local, regional, and global efforts — governmental and private —to eradiate or limit their spread; (3) identify feasible cross-national strategies that, if implemented, would strengthen law enforcement to cope with T/S; and (4) assess not only the scope of T/S exploitation and their multiple forms — to put a human face on T/S — but also the adequacy and capacity of national, regional, and global programs to address the physical and psychological needs of victims and to recover and protect their human rights.

2005 International Summer Institute: THE LIFE OF KIDS AROUND THE WORLD
June 27—July 1, 2005

This five-day intensive institute provided teachers with ideas on how to integrate global and regional issues into curriculum through lens of children around the world.

Fifth Annual EU Day
April 12, 2005

The European Union Center at UIUC conducted its fifth annual EU day on April 12. Her Excellency Arlette Conzemius, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the United States, attended the ceremonies and gave a keynote speech on "The State of the European Union." Three high school students received the European Center essay award.

Foreign Language Day 2005
April 7, 2005

Over 1,300 students from 37 school districts from Effingham to East St. Louis attended the traditional Foreign Language Day at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The event is co-sponsored by IHS.

Troubled Waters in a Globalizing World
November 6, 2004

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Joint Area Studies Committee and CIBER sponsored an international economics workshop called "Troubled Waters in a Globalizing World: Community, Property and Conflict Over a Vital Resource" for K-12 teachers on November 6, 2004 in Urbana, IL, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. CPDUs were available.

Masters Degree Program Evaluation
October 30, 2004

IHS educators evaluated the Master's Degree program in Global Education, to be offered by the College of Education in conjunction with the Center for Global Studies at UIUC.


Southern Illinois Regional Conference

IHS Southern Illinois Regional Conference “The U.S. Role in the World: Four Futures” was hosted by John A. Logan College on October 12, with a video conference with a school in England.

IHS Regional Meetings
September 25 and October 2, 2004

IHS conducted two meetings with representatives of pilot schools and school associations. The focus of the meetings, the first one on September 25 in Champaign for IHS "south of I-80" and the second on October 2 in Chicago for the "northern - Greater Chicago" group, was on IHS program sustainability and future development. It was decided to publish an IHS compendium of school experiences in the international dimension during the past two and a half years. Another positive development is the strengthening of the regional IHS associations and the collaboration with the International Career Academy (ICA) after IMSA decided not to administer any longer this IHS capstone program due to terminated ICA funding form the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE).


Peoria WACA and IHS Regional Association Conference
September 20, 2004

At this conference, entitled "Global Security: Looking Beyond Religion for Factors of Instability," over one hundred participants listened to presentations by a distinguished panel of UIUC faculty on energy and international conflicts, climate changes, and food security, followed by a lively discussion.

Fulbright-Hays - Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad
Summer, 2004

Several IHS educators studied educational systems, cultures, and specific themes thanks to grants from the prestigious Fulbright program this summer. Among them were Ken Mularski from W. Payton CPHS (China) and Melina Barona from IHS (Bulgaria).


11th iEARN Conference in Kosice
July 10-17, 2004

A delegation of Illinois IHS teachers participated in the 11th iEARN conference in Kosice, Slovakia July 10-17, 2004. The conference was attended by over 500 teachers and students from 73 countries. The focus of this conference was on strengthening international school projects and discussions via Internet.

The 10th iEARN Conference in Japan
July 20-27, 2003

An IHS delegation of educators attended the iEARN Japan conference. This delegation returned to its respective schools and established international school partnerships for online projects.


Global Studies Forum 2003

The first annual Illinois International High School conference, Global Studies Forum 2003 shared best high school practices in international education in Illinois with educators, businesspersons, and community leaders. It was hosted by Evanston Township High School. CPDUs were available.
