About the Illinois International High School Initiative

"We are challenged to develop a world perspective. No individual can live alone, no nation can live alone, and anyone who feels that he can live alone is sleeping through a revolution…. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality."
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. MARCH 31, 1968

The International High School Initiative (IHSI) focuses on the international dimension of teaching, learning, and community engagement. This program is striving to ensure that all Illinois high school students build the international awareness, skills, and understanding necessary to cooperate and compete effectively in today's globally-connected environments.

IHSI provides secondary school teachers and students and teachers with opportunities and resources to:

  • Expand their understanding and knowledge of international and global issues
  • Strengthen teachers' ability to develop and integrate curriculum focusing on international and global issues

International High Schools have integrated programs of study containing

  • Coursework with enhanced international content in a variety of subject areas such as languages, social studies, science, the arts, business and economics
  • Internationally focused extracurricular activities that enhance the impact of the learning and teaching environment
