This major was developed in response to the growing demand for skills in the analysis and solution of contemporary world problems. The requirements of the major enrich, complement and coordinate departmental offerings with the goal of providing a knowledge of foreign cultures and understanding of global processes which are critical for students preparing for careers or further study in a variety of fields including international affairs, public policy, government service, business, law, finance, and communication. The International Studies major draws upon the resources of faculty and departments across the University, and may be particularly attractive as a second major for students planning to combine a specific disciplinary major with a career in the international arena.
The major in International Studies focuses on global themes, the study of one world area in some depth including language and culture of the area, and expertise in one technical area. Students will take courses in a number of departments and work with an adviser to construct the major curriculum most appropriate to individual interest and future employment and/or educational aspirations. The major will provide each student with a focused multidisciplinary base of course work relating to a specific geographic area and advanced language training needed for the area.
