The central mission of the EUC is education. To achieve this goal the Center has created a core interdisciplinary graduate seminar that brings together students and faculty from across the campus in agriculture, business, economics, engineering, law, political science, and so on.

In order to explore the complex problems facing the European Union and the United States, many graduate programs on campus incorporate the Center's interdisciplinary seminars as electives in their degree program.

EU Center faculty also teach courses in their disciplines at the graduate and undergraduate levels that address European topics. The Center has developed a concentration in European Union Studies for undergraduate students in the International Studies major and minor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Programs in the EU offered through the Study Abroad Office at the University of Illinois and through other institutions enable students and faculty to study in Europe and earn course credit or advance their careers. Programs range from week-long to year-long commitments.

Interdisciplinary Graduate Seminar

This seminar is intended to provide students from academic disciplines and professional fields across the campus an opportunity to study the European Union (EU) and EU-US relations and to introduce to their research an explicit European perspective. This semester the seminar will focus on EU institutions and treaties, economic and cultural issues surrounding the enlargement, the growth and stability pact, pension reform, and other topics. Due to the seminar's interdisciplinary nature, a student's familiarity with the issues considered will vary. All students are nonetheless encouraged to participate actively in seminar meetings.

Concentration in EU Studies for International Studies Majors

This major was developed in response to the growing demand for skills in the analysis and solution of contemporary world problems. The requirements of the major enrich, complement and coordinate departmental offerings with the goal of providing a knowledge of foreign cultures and understanding of global processes which are critical for students preparing for careers or further study in a variety of fields including international affairs, public policy, government service, business, law, finance, and communication. The International Studies major draws upon the resources of faculty and departments across the University, and may be particularly attractive as a second major for students planning to combine a specific disciplinary major with a career in the international arena.
